About India AI Rulebook

India AI Rulebook is an independent editorial project translating India's digital regulations and AI governance frameworks into plain, accessible English. This site is built for founders, developers, freelancers, and content creators who live under these rules but don't have the time to parse dense legal documents every day.

The Origin

In February 2026, New Delhi hosted the India AI Impact Summit 2026, the first of its kind in the Global South. The energy was historic. The policy ambitions were big. And everyone was talking about what AI means for our future.

Somewhere in all that excitement, one simple question stuck with me: where do I go to actually read the rules we are creating?

The speeches were inspiring, but I wanted to go beyond the press releases and look at the actual text. What has India written down so far, and what does "responsible AI" look like when it becomes an Act, a notification, or a guideline?

The answers existed, contained within official Gazette notifications, ministry documents, and technical legal language that takes real time to work through. So I started reading those documents, understanding them, and writing it all down in plain, simple English.

Eventually I decided to make that learning log public. That is how India AI Rulebook began.

Who Writes This

I am Sandesh Kokate, the editor of India AI Rulebook. I'm based in Pune, and for seventeen years I've worked in enterprise software as a business analyst, project manager, and Scrum Master. The job, across all of it, has been the same: take an ambiguous specification, work out what it actually requires, and write it down so a team can build against it without guessing.

Regulation is a specification. A badly written one, usually, scattered across an Act, a set of Rules, a Gazette notification, and three press releases that don't quite agree on a date.

I am not a lawyer. That is precisely why this site is built the way it is. I can't ask you to take my interpretation on authority, so I don't. Every claim links to the primary document, and where I haven't been able to confirm something, the page says so instead of smoothing it over. You should be able to check my work in under a minute, and if you can't, that is a defect in the page.

Three standards hold this together:

  • Primary sources only. Every summary, checklist, and guide is built directly from official legislative texts, Gazette notifications, India Code, MeitY circulars, and court judgments. Where a claim hasn't yet been confirmed against the primary document, it is marked and listed in the verification queue.
  • Claims link to sources. Plain English does not mean unverified. Claims link to the official document they come from. Where one isn't confirmed, the page says so.
  • Built to adapt. Policy moves fast and interpretation is genuinely complex. When rules change or ambiguities surface, the content gets updated. If you spot an error, tell me. That is how this gets better.

Standards and Disclosures

How I Use AI Tools

In the spirit of the transparency principles in India's AI Governance Guidelines, which this site covers, I disclose that I use AI tools including Claude, Perplexity, and Lovable to assist with research collation, drafting, and site development. AI tools support the volume of work. They do not replace human judgment. Every article is reviewed, cross-referenced with official government sources, and then published. The framing, editorial choices, and responsibility for accuracy are entirely human.

Free, Always

All content on India AI Rulebook is free and will remain free. There is no premium tier, no paywalled articles, no sponsored content, no affiliate links, and no consulting service attached. I run this as an open educational resource, full stop. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed on this page first.

When We Don't Know Yet

Some facts on this site — an appointment that hasn't been officially announced, a rule still in draft, a figure not yet gazetted — genuinely aren't confirmed anywhere yet. When that happens, I mark it as pending rather than fill the gap with a plausible guess, a forum post, or a news article's paraphrase of the actual document. I'd rather be visibly incomplete than quietly wrong. If you know of an official update to a pending item, email contact@indiaairulebook.com.

Corrections

Mistakes get fixed in public, dated, with what changed. See the corrections log. Corrections are the fastest way to improve this site and they are always welcome.
